Album Review – Krupke – The Pony You Always Wanted Died Today

Many bands instrumental palette consists simply of guitar, bass, drums, and vocals. But not Toronto’s art-rockers Krupke. Instead their palette is bursting with creativity featuring  a glockenspiel, clarinet, violin, piano, guitar, and drums. The whole band’s image is covered in creativity. At a November show which was supposed to be their album release party was turned into a slap bracelet party after they had to delay their debut album. They engage in DIY art projects such as handmade Paper-mache and crayon drawn posters. The album name is “The Pony You Always Wanted Died Today” and features a cover with a strange but entertaining clay figure depiction of a pony being carried away from a campfire with a rhino by strange creatures. But enough about how creative they are, on to the music.  With a heavy dose of glockenspiel it is hard to not think of Los Campesinos! and their fun danceable songs. Krupke blend a variety genres of music using variety of instruments showing that the band are strong instrumentalists and aren’t afraid of being limited to one style or sound. The variety makes the album an entertaining listen of a band that sounds fun but should also be taken seriously.
While I’ve never been able to see them live, listening to the album shows why their live shows are known to be a fun experience. They will be taking part in NXNE (North By North East) in Toronto next week playing two shows on Thursday June 17th at The Boat and on Saturday at Rancho Relaxo (with The Darcys & The Winks).

  1. Hey Broken speaker thanks so much for the kind words. Great blog!!!

  2. This is a wicked album!!! See you at NXNE

  3. This is arguably my favourite Toronto act right now. Incredible experience seeing them live, and they’re all great people to boot, which is a nice touch in such a jaded industry. Highly recommended. “Pony” hasn’t left my iPod since I got my copy at Rancho.
