Montreal band Suuns (formerly Zeroes) have a few great things going their way that should grab your attention. First off they have been signed to the great independent label Secretly Canadian. Secondly they are currently on tour with Land of Talk. Thirdly their EP and album have been produced by Jace Lasek (The Besnard Lakes) in his Breakglass Studios. But finally and most importantly, the best thing they have going their way are great tunes.
Listening to their simplistic and sparse tunes instantly draws that Joy Division type of imagery and feeling. That cold, dark, yet danceable sound. The heavy bass keeps the life going through the songs as the high hat and snare drum are hit in a tight rhythmic fashion. The sounds of retro synths keeps things interesting such as on the first track Disappearance Of the Skyscraper which starts with a few minutes of synth before being joined by vocals and drums. While vocals do find their place throughout the EP, they usually don’t jump in until pretty far into the song. And when they do appear, they are mixed in a soft way in which they don’t overpower or disrupt the flow of the songs that have already been established by the strong minimalist instrumentation.
Fans of the whole “post punk revival” sound should definitely check out their Zeroes EP which is available as a free download through the Secretly Canadian website. Their full length album Zeroes QC is set to be released October 12th.
