Montreal band Suuns now how to crank up that post-punk mechanical and cold yet danceable sound. Their recently reviewed Zeroes EP showcased this sound, and their full-length Zeroes QC is much more of the same, just on a bigger scale.
The album starts off ripping into your skull with the electro sounds of “Armed For Peace” before picking up some hand claps and other synths as the song builds up and adds various sounds like that of an electric guitar and vocals. The minimalistic post-punk sounds continue on the second track “Gaze” with guitars that could easily be mistaken for Turn On the Bright Lights era Interpol. The album has it’s chaotic moments such as the high pitch squeals of “Marauder”. The album also has it’s softer and sweeter moments such as closing track “Organ Blues” which is built around long held chords on an organ surrounded by sparse percussion and haunting vocals.
What makes this whole album so interesting to listen is the way you don’t know what to expect from track to track. It is full of strange little blips and bloops and moments that sound like they could explode into complete chaos, yet it never does as that chaos is contained by the walls of tight rhythms. Each song sounds carefully crafted and planned. Whether that means just going on an instrumental jam or engaging in a more traditional vocal focused song, Suuns are able to pull it off.
