Album Review: COWLICK – Wires

Trees are pretty cool organisms. As they age they typically grow taller and have new branches shoot out. By Divine Right is one such band. A look through past members of the band, you’ll see notable Canadian musicians there such as Brendan Canning (of Broken Social Scene), Leslie Feist, Brian Borcherdt (Holy Fuck), Loel Campbell (Wintersleep), and many more. The latest album from the By Divine Right family tree comes from Dylan Hudecki and his brother Jackson Hudecki. Their band COWLICK has been around since the winter of 2006. Since then, the band has evolved into a three piece with the addition of Ian Parker. Their second album, Wires, was released late this past summer.

With this album the band have taken a grassroots approach basically promoting the album and themselves by themselves. While this could be a disastrous approach for many overly ambitious band, COWLICK have the music to back their ambitions. Opening track Wires is about as good of an opening track as you can ask for an album. With a simple but catchy guitar clanks that are joined by vocals, and finally an explosion of tight drums in a song that not only captures your attention, but offers high hopes for the remainder of the album. The remaining seven tracks on the album offer more great vocals, guitar work, and tight percussion. The songs are played in a way that keeps you on your heels as a listener as the tempo and mood of songs are constantly changing such as “Can Neu Do It” which starts off fairly slow and simple but eventually melts into guitar solos. It is hard to put a finger on their exact sound as it is as much indie rock as it is psychedelic. The album is energetic, it is exciting, and it is worth listening to.
