As I look out my window in Nova Scotia this afternoon, I see rain, rain, and more rain. It has been raining for days, and that isn’t going to change anytime soon. It is hard listening to Prince Edward Island’s Paper Lions (formerly known as the Chucky Danger Band) and their recent Trophies EP, not because of the musical content, but more so because of the mood it sets. Filled with melodic pop rock songs, it sounds more like a beach party or backyard BBQ than a slow rainy day. Paper Lions are accessible enough to get airplay on MuchMusic, but hip enough for that not to be a deterrent for those who avoid music television and mainstream music with a 39 and a half foot pole. The single “Lost The War” has been popular with listeners and gained attention when it was the iTunes free single of the week a few weeks ago. The catchy vocals and sing-along-able chorus combined with catchy guitar hooks suck the listener in. However the song that caught my attention on first listen is “Don’t Touch That Dial”. After one listen that command was fairly useless as the song is incredibly catchy and has ensure the only dial I’ll be touching is the volume to crank up this fast paced pop ditty. Clocking in at just under 17 minutes, this EP is almost over before it even begins, but it is a full 17 minutes with each song sounding like single material. Yet another exciting band out of PEI that should ensure that folks are dancing from Charlottetown to Victoria as they are full of boundless energy and ample ambition.
