Album Review: Tupperware Remix Party – Poised to Dominate

It doesn’t happen very often, but every once in a while our planet Earth is infiltrated by beings of other planets. Sometimes they just hover around in the sky to make us question our sanity or strengthen our beliefs in extraterrestrial life forms. However the best case scenario is when they simply take the form of four humans and make space rock. Halifax’s Tupperware Remix Party, or TWRP for short, have been getting people on their feet and dancing since 2007. Perhaps best known for their elaborate stage show and spandex heavy costumes, TWRP bring together comedy and skill.

Their debut full length album Poised To Dominate begins with narration regarding TWRP and their purpose as they land on earth. This narration returns throughout the album that in fact is more like a story set to music. The songs that occur after this are heavy on keys, synths, electric guitar and a tight rhythm section of drum and bass. Their music style draws heavily on electronica influences mixed with a heavy dose of heavy rock. Throw in a little funk and you’ll be dancing for 40 minutes straight. While some of the albums can seem repetitive at times, it is an infectiously catchy album that is constantly in fast motion. At times it sounds like video game music, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. After all, how many times have you lost track of time playing video games? TWRP have successfully crafted an enjoyable debut album with Poised to Dominate. Silly at times, it may not be an album to listen to on a daily basis, but when you just need something a little out there mixed with good instrumentation than it is just what some of us earthlings need.
