Album Review: Spring Breakup – It’s Me, It’s Not You

Unless you’ve lived under a rock or hate Seinfeld, you most likely have the scene of George Costanza being broken up with in the coffee shop with the “It’s Me, It’s Not You” line embedded in your brain. The album title is a good indication that this album is going to provide a few chuckles and smiles. The combination of Yukon’s Kim Barlow and Newfoundland’s Mathias Kom provide an album that is sound musically and features the type of lyrics that grab your attention throughout the 13 track album. Right from the get go with the song “The Effect I Have On Women”, Kim and Mathias exchange vocals telling a story about their effects on both men and women and declaring that they are ten out of elevens as they toot their own horns in a hilarious fashion. When you see a song with a title “Puppy Dogs & Rainbows” it may be easy to dismiss it as being too silly to take seriously, but a listen to the banjos and guitars of the song, it is hard to not tap your foot along and enjoy it and indeed take it seriously. I almost spit into my salad while listening to their take on the traditional Jamaican song “Mother & Wife” as I laughed out loud listening to the logic behind if you would save your mother or wife if they were drowning. The songs are short and the songs are cute. They have the ability to put a big smile on your face as they tell their tales. If humour was the only thing that propelled this album I would be worried, but it isn’t, so I’m not worried. If you love to smile, love good stories, love the uke and banjo, then check out this album.
