To say there is a lot of music out there would be an understatement. Sometimes you can’t listen to every artist or album in great detail and write about it, which is why we are going to have Monday Madness on the Broken Speaker. Basically how it will work is we’ll post a handful of artists who have recently released music we find interesting yet may not give a full fledged review. There will be videos, free downloads, photos, and cookies.
The Toronto based retro rock infused duo of Marlon Chaplin and Luke Kuplowsky are set to release their debut EP Little Fugitives on February 8th 2011. The songs are full of life and energy, whether it be an upbeat jam like “Pop Song” or a thoughtful acoustic song like “I Met A Robot”. Check out the stream of “Boy Dressed In Blue” below.
The Barettas
Hamilton, Ontario’s trio The Barettas recently released their first 7” Touche featuring the tracks “Touche” and “Black Sheep” both available as free downloads over on their bandcamp. A little rough around the edges yet fun, the hardworking trio have put together a few songs that reflect the livelihoods where they are coming from. They kind of have that rebellious 60s girl group feel to them making them an interesting listen.

Chikita Violenta
Alright, so they may not be Canadian, but when you have Wintersleep’s Loel Campbell, The Most Serene Republic’s Tony Nesbitt-Larking, and Broken Social Scene’s Lisa Lobsinger on one album than it is going to grab our attention. The Mexican indie band have just released their album TRE3S on Arts & Crafts. It is produced by David Newfeld who is best known for his production on Broken Social Scene albums like You Forgot It In People. Listening to the album the first time through, the BSS and Most Serene Republic influences are just oozing through this album, maybe a little too much. The album is currently streaming in it’s entirety on spinner.com.

Broken Bricks are a super duper cool band, just saw them at a place downtown called Rancho Relaxo. Great show guyss!!
