Great Big Sea’s Sean McCann recently released his second solo endeavor entitled Son of a Sailor. For anybody who listens to Great Big Sea, you’ll recognize Sean as the one who sings with a little less huskiness than Alan Doyle. He has always brought an almost comforting element to their mix of folk, celtic, and rock tunes. That comforting element is on full display right from the first track “Son of a Sailor” to album closer “Back to You”. Written about personal experiences and the influences from growing up in Newfoundland, the album is full of tales and ballads of fishing, traveling, and the experiences learned in life. A highlight of the album comes during “The Reply (the ballad of John and Mary), featuring minimal instrumentation as the song focuses on the conversations between the two characters of the song. As someone who grew up on a steady diet of Great Big Sea, this song is a wonderful treat and everything I would expect from a Sean McCann album.
You can listen to a few tracks off the album over on his website.
