Album Review: Shotgun Jimmie – Transistor Sister

The soundtrack for your summer has been written, and it isn’t even summer yet. Shotgun Jimmie’s new album Transistor Sister, out on You’ve Changed Records today, is that soundtrack. The album is full of short songs that seem to be over before they start, but all come with a little bit of fun thrown in. In a way it reminds me of Apollo Ghost’s 2010 album Mount Benson in terms of the way it is full of short tracks, but a fantastic and captivating listen from beginning to end.

Opening track “Late Last Year” retells a story of having a few beers and being a little shy around a girl that was “pretty bad ass”. Towards the end of the album, Jimmie declares “when I was young I used to think I made mistakes just because I was young/now it’s plain to see that I’ll probably be screwing it up for eternity” on the track “The Haze”. The way that the album deals with insecurities while at the same time dealing with everyday things like having a beer in your pocket, taking the train, going to community college makes it an album that is relatable.

The album doesn’t seem to have any low points. All the songs are just the right length, with none of them every dragging on or growing repetitive. Even short tracks like the 42 second “Paper Planes” are integral components of the album with it’s catchy lyrics and poppy drum beats. The lo-fi sounds of the album, the honest and relatable lyrics, and the guitar riffs captivate the listener from start to finish of Transistor Sister. I know for one as soon as spring chases the winter away, this will accompany me on some outdoor adventures for quite some time.
