Concert Review: We Are The City and Aidan Knight

Aidan Knight

The first of two B.C. artists to take the stage, the Victoria native played through a few favourites off of his full length Versicolour as well as new songs from the Friendly Fires EP. Alternating between an acoustic guitar and a couple electric guitars, Aidan was able to grab everybody’s attention with his powerful vocals. It was the sort of vocal performance that can give you chills as he  slightly contorts his face while backing away from the mic to sing loudly. He also showed a sense of humour as he talked about a sandwich he had for lunch and told the story of losing his shoes in Quebec. In between songs he allowed the audience to ask him questions. He seemed very comfortable performing to a crowd that was willing to listen and give back. The highlight of the night came towards the end of his set halfway through “Knitting Something Nice For You”. After starting the song solo and very sombre, his friends from We Are The City joined in on percussion and keys for a rocking and emotion packed ending. The three guys remained on stage as they played through everybody’s favourite song, “Jasper”.

We Are The City

Usually when going to a show, I’m at least somewhat familiar with the headliner’s music. With We Are The City, I had only heard the buzz surrounding the band,  primarily from West Coast friends. The trio definitely surpassed expectations. Built around keys, guitar, and drums, their songs were full of surprise and unpredictability. Irregular timing of drum beats, pauses, and the occasional whirl of guitar led to an interesting show. They played a lot of material off their upcoming album High School set to be released next week.  With their first cross Canada tour almost in the books, it is evident this band will go places.

Perhaps what made this show so enjoyable was the fact you could tell that both Aidan and the boys from We Are The City enjoy travelling, working, and playing together. Their were no pretentious vibes coming from any of them, just a willingness to have fun and connect with the audience. When you can get everyone in the room down on the floor, clapping, singing along, and interacting with the performer, well you know you’re doing something right.
