Album Review: Kate Maki – Moonshine

You know that feeling when you grab an old book off the shelf? The pages yellowed, a little stiff, the ink looking like it may fall off the page, and that smell that can only be described as old. Moonshine, the new album from Kate Maki elicits such feelings. The album sounds like something you would expect to be played through an AM radio in an old car. Instead of going into a studio and producing intricate and complex layered songs, the album was recorded in Maki’s basement. Friends from Cuff The Duke, The Pinecones, Fembots, and The Minotaurs traveled to Sudbury for a few snow filled few days of recording around one microphone. The result is an album that sounds  like a group of friends gathering around a campfire performing songs, an album that you could easily picture yourself in the corner tapping your foot as it unraveled.

Songs like “Lose My Mind”, “Shine On My Mind”, and “When I Go” show off Maki’s talents of spinning tales with a soft voice to tell the narratives. Perhaps it is a good thing the album only clocks in at under 30 minutes as this country/folk album can feel a little repetitive at times lacking the type of songs that draw you in time after time.

The album is available on May 24th.
