Scientific research completed by the scientists shows that there are two types of catchy songs.
Type A Catchy Songs are defined as songs that get stuck in your head but you wish they weren’t stuck in your head because they are so bad. For example if you see the Nyan Cat video, you will no doubt want to pound your head into a concrete block until you can’t remember it.
Type B Catchy Songs are defined as songs that unintentionally get stuck in your head, but you’re more than okay with that because it is such a good song. Halifax based band Writer’s Strike fall under this category. A listen through the three song Stay Down EP will leave you singing “stay down, stay down, stay down”, “come on, come on” and “New York City, 1980″ at some point later in the day. The songs have all the elements of a catchy song.
The five piece band put fun into music. Fun in the sense that they write songs that you can instantly dive into and sing along with. Vocal duties are held by Darryl Smith, Conor Hancey and Matt Davidson as they take turns holding down the spotlight or throwing their voices into the sing-along choruses. Amy Bollivar keeps things a little retro with her synths and sign holding. Tynan Dunfield sits on a stool and hits things with sticks.
Also, the end of “Stay Down” says receptively “Overeducated, underwhelmed and underpaid”. Truer words have never been sung. This EP throws together honest themes that people can relate to and connect with. The EP will whet your appetite while waiting for the band to release their full length album set to drop in the spring of 2012.
