One of my favourite experiences at a concert is when you’re listening to a band shred through a song. Head is bobbing, foot tapping. Then suddenly the band gets even louder with a wall of sound that bursts through the speakers. Your innards start to vibrate and you know your sense of hearing degraded a notch. But it was totally worth it.
We Need Secrets is the project of Chad Peck from Kestrels, a band that knows a thing or two about noise, guitars and rock. On this 7″ single, a-side “Purple” starts off with vocals buried behind a barrage of fuzzy guitars. It sounds pretty awesome, but then that awesomeness is magnified to the nth degree halfway through the song when even more noise kicks in and recreates that innard vibrating experience. It’s hard to make out what the song is about exactly, but that hazy mysterious feel is what makes this track so appealing.
B-side “Slow Summer” doesn’t have the magic or catchiness of the flip side. It still brings the noise and has a high chance of leading the listener to pull out the ol’ air guitar and/or air drum and play along.
This album is part of the Noyes Records Subscription series. It comes on a lovely blue vinyl. It’s worth the money just to look at.
