Long Weekends – Don’t Reach Out 7″

The first time I heard of Long Weekends was this past summer when they played a show in the CKDU lobby before heading to Sappyfest. I couldn’t make out a word that they were singing. I thought it was because of old speakers they have at CKDU, but after getting home and immediately downloading their Warmer Weather EP, it became obvious this is a sound they are going for.

But it is a good thing.

The Halifax trio make a sound that throws elements of garage rock, pop and punk into a distorted mess. While it is hard to make out the words, they are delivered almost like an instrument where the sound of the voice matters more than the words.

The a-side “Don’t Reach Out” is carried along by a heavy bass riff complemented by catchy guitar riffs that keeps the energy levels high throughout the track.

Flip over the record and b-side “Show Your Face” brings more dominant bass riffs, steady percussion and guitar that fades in and out. The track knows when it is the right time to through in some guitar jabs or when to sit back and let the bass and drums pull along the weight of the track.

Both tracks feel like dreams, something you can’t quite focus on closely, but it makes sense. Whatever Long Weekends are trying to do, it sure works well.

If you like pretty green vinyl, you can order the 7″ through the Noyes Records subscription series.
