Ryan Hemsworth dropped the Kitsch Genius EP during the wee hours of the moment for all of the internet to hear. We caught up with him before the release and asked him to give us a little overview of what he was going for with this EP.
I mean, we had no idea what Kitsch meant.
“Kitsch is like crappy art trying to copy tasteful art. When you’re sampling one thing and come up with another thing that feels new and fun, you feel a little… Kitschy? It’s hard to avoid, I sample the stuff I like. I guess in a way I make music more as a listener than a fully developed, uncompromising artist. I love Gucci Mane, so I sample Gucci Mane. I love video game music (probably more than video games), so I sample their soundtracks. Tried to make this EP for wherever; the club, the car, the grocery store. I’m not really making it for myself, but I’d be okay with listening to it while sorting through the expiry dates on milk cartons. Or spilling my drink to at the club. It’s always a gamble with a new release to see if anyone else would want to do the same thing. It also helps there’s a super cloudy remix on it (cloudy in the Super-Mario-cloud way) by my pal Exeter from Toronto!”
